It’s More than an Internship

Posted on June 18, 2009 at 1:09 pm

I never thought I would be one of those people who spoke of their job regularly in conversations. Likewise, I never really have had a job that I have truly enjoyed. I am very spontaneous, creative and somewhat ADD so routine jobs that have no variation in daily tasks are as unappealing to me as going to the dentist. Luckily, my internship with BlogCatalog has proven to be different as I am always doing something new and interesting each and every day.

I am currently working on a mock advertising proposal that has proven to be quite difficult and tedious as I am learning the math part of advertisement which includes lots of guessing and checking budgets, impressions, CPM rates, inventory percentages etc. It’s like a puzzle, if you change one thing, the whole puzzle changes. However, my interest and hunger for knowledge of the whole advertising business is constantly growing so challenges like a mock advertising proposal excites me. I was told that if I really learn and understand how to do the math part of advertising, I will have learned an essential skill that companies highly desire and value.

I have never explored the social web as a business nor have I ever been exposed to advertising in the past so learning all of this new and useful information has really enabled me to learn more about myself and what I am interested in. It is not hard for me to relate to those job-oriented conversationalists anymore because it makes sense. If you have a job that challenges and excites you then obviously you will talk about it.

Internship with BlogCatalog…Welcome to the Blogosphere

Hello! My name is Terry Forch. I have been interning with BlogCatalog for a week now and have already learned so much. I am a complete rookie when it comes to blogging and I feel I have been opened up to a whole new world in the blogosphere. I had no idea that people liked to blog so much! I have learned that the overall feeling of BC is that it attracts a wide variety of people thus greater traffic which seems to be the goal of most bloggers.

By speaking with numerous professionals who contribute their specialized knowledge to BlogCatalog.com, I have been provided with a deeper insight into BC and what it takes to run a website of this caliber. One person specifically, Aaron Shapiro, taught me so much. He deals with the advertising aspect of BC. Let me say now, I know nothing of advertising, so I was pretty intimidated to speak with Aaron. Luckily, he is an extremely nice guy with mountains of knowledge to pass on. He explained the basics of advertising and challenged me to try and think of endemic and non-endemic companies that could advertise on BC via the vertical categories such as Entertainment. I am starting this project this week and will keep you up to date.

I am also reading a book called, Marketing to The Social Web, to help get me gain insight into using the social web as a business tool. It is a very reader-friendly book that can help even the least internet saavy person turn their small business into one that is reputable and profitable. It not only reshapes marketing strategies, it provides tools and references like Blogpulse.com to assist in every aspect of building a business.

All in all, I see a tremendous opportunity ahead of me by interning here and cannot wait to see what lays ahead.
