BloggersUnite for Human Rights 2009: Africa’s World War

BloggersUnite for Human Rights

Sixty years ago, after the horrors of World War II and Nazi Germany, the international community responded that all people are entitled to the same set of human rights by virtue of being human. These include the right to freedom from torture and arbitrary imprisonment as well as the right to sufficient food and shelter, healthcare, employment and education. Unfortunately, an enormous amount of people all over the world are not able to live the life of a dignified human being as their human rights are constantly being abused. I have chosen to write about the violent and brutal conflict in the Second Congo War aka Africa’s World War. It began in 1998 and officially ended 2003 when the Transitional Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo took power but hostilities continue to this day. This war which is considered to be the deadliest conflict worldwide since World War II and is the largest war in modern African history. By 2008, the war and its aftermath had killed 5.8 million, mostly from preventable diseases and starvation. Tragically, the result has been numerous victims viciously massacred, raped, dismembered and a whole generation of youth traumatized by their forced participation in the brutality of war. Just recently, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has been prosecuting individuals (rebel leaders) in Africa for genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes and the crime of aggression. Germain Katanga, leader of the FRPI, and Thomas Lubanga, leader of the Hema UPC militia, are two arch-enemy rebel leaders who are finally being prosecuted and held accountable for the brutal violence bestowed upon the innocent Congolese people. For more information, check out The Reckoning which is a documentary film by Skylight Pictures that highlights the atrocities committed in Africa. It is very powerful, informational and really brings to light the human rights issues at hand.

Every person is born with certain rights by virtue of being human. We all have the right to live dignified lives, free from torture and arbitrary imprisonment. We have the right to adequate food, shelter, healthcare, education and employment. People who violate these human rights must be held accountable for their actions. The Hema tribesman in the Reckoning video says is perfectly, “Without justice, people will have no respect for each other.” People will continue to ruthlessly kill, torture, rape, dismember and exploit innocent people and children if they are not stopped and prosecuted. I applaud the efforts of the International Criminal Court and hope they continue to bring evil killers and human rights violators to justice.

Time Flies..

It’s crazy how fast time flies by when you are busy and having fun. I’ve been interning with BlogCatalog for almost 2 months now and before I knew it, the summer is almost over! Here’s what I’ve been up to recently..I have won a contest hosted by Orbitz for a free airline ticket on Twitter (Thanks to Jason from BlogCatalog for notifying me about the contest!)

Orbitz Orbitz Congratulations @tforch!! You’ve won a round trip airline ticket! Pls DM us your email address and we’ll be in touch! from web

Rothbury 2009I went to the Rothbury Music Festival in Michigan for July 4th weekend, came down with the flu on July 3rd, didn’t get to experience Rothbury to its fullest potential, once so ever, as I was lying in a hotel room the whole weekend wishing I could go home but unable to drive the 12 hour journey back to Northern Virginia because I was dying…(wow that was a long run on sentence).

Now that I’m better, I’ve continued my work with BlogCatalog. My daily routine is fairly structured with a few things being added in as they need to get done. Generally my duties include monitoring emails, making changes to our advertising spreadsheet and monitoring BlogCatalog mentions in the media all the while documenting everything on various Google Docs. Presently, I am in the works of drafting a media story for BlogCatalog about why blogging is so great. Hopefully, after some final tweaks are made, it will appear on the website!

The next big thing on my To-Do List is Bloggers Unite for Human Rights 2009 on Friday, July 17. The purpose is for bloggers to unite and make a statement that all people are born with basic human rights and freedoms. There are various topics to choose from to write about or you can come up with one of your own. Please join me in this event and keep an eye out for my blog post!

Bloggers Unite for a Free Iran!

Posted on June 29, 2009 at 12:16 pm in

The election of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has set off a wave of protests in Tehran, alleging electoral fraud in support of opposition candidate, Mir-Hossein Mousavi. In response, the police and Basij have violently suppressed protestors through firing into the crowd, using pepper spray, batons and other weapons. There have been mass arrests of numerous opposition leaders, journalists and demonstrators as well as numerous reported deaths including Neda Agha-Soltan, a young girl who was shot to death by what appeared to be a single sniper shot. Her death was caught on camera and spread like wildfire through YouTube and Facebook thus making her the global martyr for pro-democracy protests. I bet this is one of the reasons why the Iranian government has shut down media outlets. They want to keep the atrocities being committed ‘hush, hush’ but they cannot as enough information has already been leaked and we are well aware of the situation. Aaron Rhodes, a spokesperson for International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran, urges the government to end restrictions and infringements on civil liberties which can lead to violent and dangerous public confrontations. We need to stand together and voice our opposition to the unjust and inhumane treatment of the Iranian people who want what every human wants, freedom.

I have included a List of those Detained and Killed available to view but keep in mind it isn’t comprehensive due to the strict restrictions on the media.

This video is very graphic and should not be seen by young viewers.

It’s More than an Internship

Posted on June 18, 2009 at 1:09 pm in

I never thought I would be one of those people who spoke of their job regularly in conversations. Likewise, I never really have had a job that I have truly enjoyed. I am very spontaneous, creative and somewhat ADD so routine jobs that have no variation in daily tasks are as unappealing to me as going to the dentist. Luckily, my internship with BlogCatalog has proven to be different as I am always doing something new and interesting each and every day.

I am currently working on a mock advertising proposal that has proven to be quite difficult and tedious as I am learning the math part of advertisement which includes lots of guessing and checking budgets, impressions, CPM rates, inventory percentages etc. It’s like a puzzle, if you change one thing, the whole puzzle changes. However, my interest and hunger for knowledge of the whole advertising business is constantly growing so challenges like a mock advertising proposal excites me. I was told that if I really learn and understand how to do the math part of advertising, I will have learned an essential skill that companies highly desire and value.

I have never explored the social web as a business nor have I ever been exposed to advertising in the past so learning all of this new and useful information has really enabled me to learn more about myself and what I am interested in. It is not hard for me to relate to those job-oriented conversationalists anymore because it makes sense. If you have a job that challenges and excites you then obviously you will talk about it.

So Far, So Good

Posted on June 4, 2009 at 4:08 pm in

It is easy for a naive blogger to feel overwhelmed as the vast amounts of blogs, information and people explodes on the endless World Wide Web. I know because that is how I felt.

I registered my blog on BlogCatalog.com as I have come to find out that having your blog on a blog directory helps increase traffic which is a goal of most, if not all, bloggers. The homepage of BlogCatalog is filled with so many things to do that I didn’t know where to start. I tend to get migraines when I get overwhelmed and stressed out so I decided to take a step back, continue reading Marketing to the Social Web to get more comfortable with blogging lingo and to get ideas for relevant tags and keywords.

After a few days, I decided to search for “music festivals” as you know that music is a passion of mine. To my delight, I found everything I could possibly desire on the subject. As I browsed different blogs pertaining to music festivals, I found the toolbar at the top of each blog that presented options to share, comment and see related blogs very convenient and useful. This made it easy for a new user (me) to acquire more information through other relevant blogs.

I have come to find that blogging in itself is challenging. Not only do I have to decide what topic to write about, I have to add tags. Adding tags is not as easy as it sounds, you have to think from the viewer’s perspective; What keywords would a person use to search for a blog?  Through talking to various BlogCatalog professionals and reading Marketing to the Social Web, I have learned that adding relevant tags can largely increase the probability of your blog being seen. Marketing to the Social Web has also aided in my learning of blogging lingo as well as ideas for relevant tags and keywords.

Lastly, I wanted to include a quick run-down on what I have been doing during my internship. As promised, I have included my Advertising Project which I mentioned in an earlier blog so feel free to have a look and leave feedback. In addition to blogging, I also have continued to work with Aaron Shapiro on advertising opportunities and strategies. Recently, I have been working with a new addition to BlogCatalog, Selina Jane. She is an important contributor as she provides valuable insight into monitoring company media mentions on the web and I am excited to work with her.

….until next time.

Going to Concerts is GOOD for your Health!

Posted on June 4, 2009 at 4:00 pm in

A fellow blogger, Ales Normales has a blog called Health Health List which featured a post stating the 10 Reasons Why Going to Concerts is Good for Your Health. They include:

1. The feeling of excitement that a concert brings causes a sudden rush of adrenalin that is good for the heart.

2. This activity will also allow one to burn calories which can be a good form of physical exercise for the day.

3. Live music gives an uplifting feeling that is good for physical and emotional well being.

4. Live concerts allow one to perspire which leads to faster metabolism.

5. Going to concerts is a healthy alternative to spending an evening at home watching television.

6. Watching your favorite music icon, live, can bring a sense of confidence that can boost your overall well being.

7. Live concerts are social gatherings that can promote positive energy resulting to overall good health and great physical outlook.

8. Listening to live music can enhance your senses, resulting to more alert and active physical condition.

9. Being within a live concert promotes confidence that can lead to a healthier approach in life.

10. Live music can bring about a healthy balance that is good for the body and mind.

I love going to concerts and am so excited for summer festival season! I have been to Bonnaroo and All Good in the past so I decided to switch it up and go to Rothbury and Outside Lands this year.

Someone responded to this article stating that concerts are good for your health but music festivals are not. I disagree with this statement. I believe that music festivals can be good for your health as attendees gain physical stamina. Just show some moderation and be in tune with the needs of your body (keep hydrated!)

Music is definitely good for your soul and a strong, stable, peaceful mental health is an essential step in having good health.

By the way, has anyone gone to any of these music festivals?

Brought up Christian now a Quaker??

Posted on May 29, 2009 at 11:53 am in

I read a blog post at http://www.howisbradley.com/ that refers to a website called Belief-O-Matic which asks questions about one’s religious views and then provides approximately 25 religions with a percentage reflecting how similar your own personal beliefs are with those specific religions.

I was brought up as a Christian in a non-denominational church that strictly teaches from the bible. I still believe in most aspects of the religion but have learned to question things that don’t make sense and not blindly follow anything. At one point in my college career at George Mason University , I thought I wanted to become a veterinarian and started to take biology classes. It is hard to be surrounded by science and accepting of its findings as well as believing and following the teachings of Christianity. For example, one question in the Belief-O-Matic test asks,

” What are the origins of the physical universe and life on earth?”

A. As in the book of Genesis, God created a mature universe and mature life forms from nothing in less than 7 days, less than 10,000 years ago.

B. As in the book of Genesis, but ‘day’ is not 24 hours, possibly refers to thousands (or even millions) of years, or to creation phases.

C. God is creating and controlling the phenomena uncovered by scientists. Or there are other spiritual explanations, but not in conflict with scientific discovery.

D. All matter and life forms are manifestations (or illusions) of the eternal Absolute (Ultimate Truth, Universal Soul or Mind, etc.).

E. Only natural forces (like evolution) and no Creator or spiritual forces. Or not sure. Or not important.

F. None of the above.

I found this question particularly hard to answer and was faced with a hard choice. The Christian in me knows that the right answer is A or B but the “scientist” in me is not so accepting of those choices. I truly believe that C is the answer but I cannot help feeling troubled about that belief because it goes against what I was brought up learning and believing.

(I am writing this while I take the test and am feeling rather overwhelmed with really deciphering what I truly believe in my heart from what I was taught growing up as a Christian. With that said, I want to clearly state that I do believe in God and that accepting him as your savior is imperative for gaining access to heaven but I also believe that the bible was written by man, inspired, yes, but human nonetheless. Christian belief acknowledges the unavoidable sinful and imperfect nature of man so how can we be expected to blindly believe and follow everything in the bible that was written by man?)

My results:

1. Orthodox Quaker (100%)

2. Reform Judaism (98%)

3. Liberal Quakers (93%)

4. Baha’i Faith (92%)

5. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (88%)

Well I never thought I would have views similar to Quakers but after reading the description I do. This is a really fun and interesting test so check it out and post your results. It will be exciting to see different reactions to it!

Internship with BlogCatalog…Welcome to the Blogosphere

Posted on May 26, 2009 at 2:06 pm in

Hello! My name is Terry Forch. I have been interning with BlogCatalog for a week now and have already learned so much. I am a complete rookie when it comes to blogging and I feel I have been opened up to a whole new world in the blogosphere. I had no idea that people liked to blog so much! I have learned that the overall feeling of BC is that it attracts a wide variety of people thus greater traffic which seems to be the goal of most bloggers.

By speaking with numerous professionals who contribute their specialized knowledge to BlogCatalog.com, I have been provided with a deeper insight into BC and what it takes to run a website of this caliber. One person specifically, Aaron Shapiro, taught me so much. He deals with the advertising aspect of BC. Let me say now, I know nothing of advertising, so I was pretty intimidated to speak with Aaron. Luckily, he is an extremely nice guy with mountains of knowledge to pass on. He explained the basics of advertising and challenged me to try and think of endemic and non-endemic companies that could advertise on BC via the vertical categories such as Entertainment. I am starting this project this week and will keep you up to date.

I am also reading a book called, Marketing to The Social Web, to help get me gain insight into using the social web as a business tool. It is a very reader-friendly book that can help even the least internet saavy person turn their small business into one that is reputable and profitable. It not only reshapes marketing strategies, it provides tools and references like Blogpulse.com to assist in every aspect of building a business.

All in all, I see a tremendous opportunity ahead of me by interning here and cannot wait to see what lays ahead.
